Some clients ask, "Why does the death of my pet feel worse than losing a human?"
Our animal companions offer us unconditional love and loyalty, which we may not always experience in our human relationships. They have been a constant, comforting presence by our side through the ups and downs of life and are sometimes our only source of comfort and physical affection. They were our safe place and losing them can feel like the ground has moved from under us.
Despite being a difficult experience for so many, pet bereavement is not always given a great deal of significance in society, and when our pet dies, we may feel uncomfortable talking about the depth of our grief. However grief is not helped by isolation.
Guilt frequently compounds our grief, since we were responsible for looking after all of our pet's needs it is hard not to feel that we have let them down.
It is completely normal to feel utterly devastated from the loss of a pet with whom you shared a deep bond.
